![]() The tragedy, most of the artists go unnoticed. Animation is the ultimate collaborative medium. The director of photography for Toy Story 3 was Kim White and she and her team were responsible for bringing Dice’s paintings to life. The actual images you will see here comes from the final film. I believe Toy Story 3 is the best example I have ever seen of the emotional impact color and lighting has on a film. The color script is started towards the very beginning of pre-production and isn’t finished until lighting for the movie is finalized. Dice Tsutsumi said, “The color script sets the tone of the film: how color and atmosphere and lighting will carry the story and the characters throughout the film”. He was in charge of creating the color script for the movie, which consists of dozens of impressionistic paintings plotting out the general emotional arc of the movie through the use of color and lighting (check out part of his color script here). With Toy Story 3 the brilliant art director Dice Tsutsumi took the helms of this beloved franchise and gave us a pallet of colors unmatched in animation. The goal isn’t to be subtle with the colors, but rather use color to drive the emotional arc of the movie. Instead, each scene usually consists of one to three key colors to establish an atmosphere. The colors are usually extremely saturated and there are few scenes where you see the whole gambit of the color wheel. Toy Story has had a distinct pallet from the beginning. Let’s talk about the color pallet used to tell the story of Toy Story 3. From the refined Pixar storytelling skills to the huge advancements in technology Toy Story 3 was able to expand its universe while keeping a firm grasp on what made the first two films so loved by the first generation of Toy Story fans. Simply put, Pixar was running on all cylinders when they made this film. And, though you could make an argument Toy Story 3 is a little repetitive and less original then the first two movies, I think the film stands out as the most visually bold film of the trilogy. I personally think Toy Story 3 is a fantastic completion of a wonderful trilogy. If anyone has anything to say in defense of these movies etc. Many call it the last great Pixar movie. Thats my tiny essay on why I dislike the 3rd and 4th movies in the Toy Story franchise. Which again makes sense, but I dont know, I believe the animation style in the first 2-3 movies were so much better, it just suited the franchise more I also disliked the animation style, the surroundings in my opinion seemed a bit to realistic while the characters were obviously very plastic looking. In Toy Story 4's defense, the movie gets infinitely better, the second half of the movie, where they enter the park. ![]() Bonnie makes a new "toy" (Andy gets Buzz as a gift), originally Bonnie spends all her time with Forkie rather than Woody, forkie runs away (Buzz gets pushed by Woody) these are two completely different points, but the overall idea is that the child's new favorite toy has to be rescued. So many similarities with the 1st one here. ![]() The 4th one is the worst one in the series by far. I do not despise Toy Story 3, and I might be giving it more hate than it deserves, but I cannot understand why it was made in the first place. Prospector Pete and Lotso are extremely similar in the sense that they are both knowledgeable toys, and seem to be nice and friendly, but throughout the movie their true colors show. Toy Story 2 had already wrapped up the story perfectly, why show Andy when he is older? The best part of the first 2 movies were seeing Andy's reaction to his toys being lost, but in the third one he just gets rid of them?(lol), I get the whole point of that was to give a subliminal message on growing up, but why? The rest is really similar to 2 in the overall story arc, characters/character get stuck in a situation which seems like the best option at first, but eventually they change their minds/mind and try to escape. However, I cannot stand Toy Story 3 and 4, 3 just seemed like a cash grab. In my eyes those two movies are masterpieces. Everything from the animation style, the relationships built, every character having a unique personality, made me fall in love with the first two movies, from when I first watched it in 2000. Let me start out by saying IMO Toy Story 1 and 2 are come in the top 5 animated movies ever.
